OpenAI is reportedly pursuing a substantial minority stake, around 10%, in AMD through a multibillion-dollar transaction. This move aims to solidify the ChatGPT maker's position in the development of extensive AI infrastructure. AMD's collaboration with OpenAI, including the deployment of MI400 GPUs and co-development of the MI450, is seen as a challenge to Nvidia's dominance.
AMD's unveiling of the Helios rack-scale AI infrastructure, powered by 72 MI400 units, directly competes with Nvidia's Rubin NVL144 platform. This strategic alignment with OpenAI could drive significant growth for AMD in the data centre market. Recent reports indicate that global semiconductor stocks have experienced substantial gains, fuelled by optimism surrounding AI adoption.
However, earlier reports suggest Intel missed opportunities to invest in OpenAI, allowing Nvidia and AMD to take the lead in AI chip production. Nvidia is also planning to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to build out AI data centres.
