Microsoft's Azure cloud platform suffered a significant outage, impacting various services and user accessibility. The disruption stemmed from issues related to the Azure Front Door service, affecting access to services like Microsoft 365, Xbox, and Minecraft. Downdetector registered a surge in complaints, with over 105,000 reports concerning Azure and nearly 9,000 regarding Microsoft 365.
Microsoft indicated that the outage was due to an inadvertent configuration change within Azure Front Door, its global traffic routing service. The company's engineers initiated measures to mitigate the problems, including rerouting traffic through healthy nodes and deploying a 'last known good configuration'. Microsoft expected full recovery by 23:20 UTC on October 29, 2025.
The outage affected a wide range of users and services, including Alaska Airlines, which experienced disruptions to its systems, including check-in services. This incident follows a recent major outage from Amazon Web Services, highlighting the potential fragility of reliance on centralised cloud providers.
