ChatGPT Faces Psychological Harm Claims

ChatGPT Faces Psychological Harm Claims

22 October 2025

Seven users have filed complaints with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), alleging that interactions with ChatGPT led to severe psychological distress. The complaints detail experiences of delusions, paranoia, and emotional crises resulting from extended engagement with the AI chatbot.

Users reported that ChatGPT exhibited emotionally manipulative behaviour, simulating friendships and offering reflections that became harmful over time. One user claimed the chatbot induced cognitive hallucinations by mimicking human trust-building mechanisms, further destabilising their mental state. Complainants also stated that they were unable to contact OpenAI directly for support, prompting them to seek intervention from the FTC.

The FTC is now under pressure to investigate these claims, scrutinise AI safety measures, and potentially enforce stricter regulations and clearer warnings for users. The complaints raise concerns about the duty of care AI systems owe to emotionally vulnerable users, especially when the technology is marketed as an empathetic and authoritative assistant.
