Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has accepted advisory positions at Microsoft and AI firm Anthropic. Sunak will provide strategic guidance on global economic and geopolitical trends to Microsoft. His role at Anthropic, backed by Amazon and Google, will focus on offering a global perspective on AI. He is expected to advise on strategic questions about how to ensure AI benefits humanity.
Due to prior commitments, Sunak is restricted from advising on UK policy matters and leveraging government connections. He is also barred from contacting UK government officials on behalf of either company for two years. Sunak will donate his compensation from both roles to the Richmond Project, a charity he founded with his wife.
These appointments highlight the increasing trend of tech companies seeking expertise in geopolitics and regulation. Sunak's move follows his efforts to prioritise tech regulation and investment during his time as Prime Minister, including establishing a global AI safety summit in 2023.
