Microsoft has prohibited its employees from using the DeepSeek application, citing concerns over data security and potential Chinese propaganda. Microsoft's Vice Chairman and President, Brad Smith, announced the ban during a Senate hearing, emphasising the risks associated with data potentially being sent to China and the app's content aligning with Chinese propaganda.
The company also does not offer DeepSeek's application in its app store. DeepSeek, developed by a Chinese AI startup, has released low-cost AI models, raising privacy concerns regarding its mobile applications. Microsoft's move highlights the increasing tension between technological innovation, data protection, and national security, especially concerning US-China relations in the AI sector. Microsoft provides guidance on blocking the DeepSeek website and application on managed devices using Intune.
