Anysphere, the company behind the AI-powered 'vibe coding' application Cursor, has secured a $900 million funding round, boosting its valuation to $9 billion. The funding was led by Thrive Capital, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz and Accel. This represents a significant increase from Anysphere's previous valuation of $2.5 billion in January.
Cursor is an AI code editor designed to enhance developer productivity through features like AI-powered code suggestions, real-time code queries, and automated code generation. It allows developers and non-coders to build software by describing what they want, effectively letting AI write much of the code. The platform supports 'vibe coding,' enabling users to speak code into existence using voice recognition and AI. Cursor operates in two modes: Chat and Composer, with Composer mode designed for generating and editing code.
Some investors have expressed concerns regarding the sustainability of AI company valuations, particularly given recent stock market instability. Despite this, the substantial funding reflects the growing trend of AI-assisted coding and the increasing popularity of tools like Cursor among developers.
