Google has launched Project Mariner, an AI web agent developed by Google DeepMind and powered by Gemini 2.0. This Chrome extension automates web-based tasks on behalf of the user. Mariner can navigate websites, interact with elements like links and forms, and extract information. It understands screen content, including text, code, images, and videos, to complete tasks.
Project Mariner is currently available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and is being integrated into the Gemini app and Search. It can research, make bookings, and even make purchases with user confirmation. Google emphasises safety, implementing measures to prevent unintended actions and prioritise user instructions. Mariner achieved an 83.5% success rate on the WebVoyager benchmark, which evaluates AI agents on real-world web tasks.
Project Mariner represents a step towards integrating AI agents into daily digital interactions, automating routine tasks and enhancing user productivity. It could be used in customer service, market research, and other business workflows. Google is actively gathering feedback from trusted testers to refine the technology before wider release.
