Google's AI Overviews are facing scrutiny after a report revealed they sometimes mirror anti-abortion viewpoints when responding to abortion-related searches. The Campaign for Accountability (CfA) found that in states requiring mandatory pre-abortion ultrasounds (Arizona, Florida, and Wisconsin), Google's AI framed these scans as beneficial for informed health choices, sourcing information from crisis pregnancy centres (CPCs). These centres aim to discourage abortions, investing heavily in online influence.
Google responded that its AI Overviews aim to present diverse perspectives and provide users with context about sources, including advertising disclosures. However, the report highlights concerns about the prominence of CPCs in AI Overviews, potentially misleading individuals seeking abortion information. This issue extends beyond standard search results, impacting Google's AI-driven future of search.
