Google and PJM AI Collaboration

10 April 2025

Google has announced a partnership with PJM Interconnection, the largest electrical grid operator in North America, to implement artificial intelligence (AI) technologies aimed at accelerating the integration of new electricity supplies into the power grid. This initiative seeks to address the significant delays in connecting renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, which have led to supply shortages and increased risks of blackouts.

The AI system will automate various tasks traditionally handled by grid planners, including the assessment of connection application viability. This automation is expected to streamline processes and reduce the time required for integrating new energy sources. Over time, the project aims to create a comprehensive digital model of the PJM grid, similar to Google Maps, which will enhance decision-making efficiency for grid operators.

Scheduled for deployment in 2025, the AI technologies will be rolled out progressively over several years. PJM serves a vast region that includes 67 million people and is home to the world's largest data center hub in northern Virginia. This collaboration not only promises to improve grid reliability but also supports the broader transition to renewable energy sources, aligning with global sustainability goals.
