What happened
Intel confirmed the cancellation of its Core Ultra 9 290K Plus and a potential Special Edition Ultra 9 SKU for the Arrow Lake generation. This decision follows the launch of Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Ultra 5 250K Plus, which offer higher clock speeds, four additional E-cores, and integrate Intel's iBOT tool designed to boost IPC. These new Plus chips are possibly Intel's last on the LGA 1851 socket.
Why it matters
The absence of a top-tier Core Ultra 9 SKU limits peak CPU performance options for high-end users and system builders within Intel's Arrow Lake lineup. Intel's focus shifts to mainstream performance and value with the Ultra 7 and Ultra 5 Plus models, which offer improved specifications. This prioritisation impacts procurement teams evaluating high-performance components and platform engineers designing systems around Intel's current generation.
