What happened
First Line Films announced Val Kilmer will co-star in the upcoming independent film "As Deep as the Grave," using generative AI to recreate his likeness and voice. Kilmer was originally cast as Father Fintan but could not film due to throat cancer complications. Kilmer and his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, granted permission for the AI recreation and receive compensation, aligning with SAG-AFTRA guidelines for performers' digital replicas with consent. This follows Kilmer's voice being digitally reconstructed for his appearance in 2022's "Top Gun: Maverick." The film, previously titled "Canyon of the Dead," also features Tom Felton, Abigail Breslin, and Wes Studi.
Why it matters
This AI-driven casting demonstrates a mechanism for studios to complete projects with actors whose health prevents them from performing while adhering to union guidelines. For procurement teams and legal counsel, this informs considerations for negotiating likeness rights and compensation. It also provides a metric for creative teams to consider AI as a viable tool for preserving artistic intent and completing productions, preventing project abandonment due to unforeseen circumstances.
