What happened
The Pentagon will adopt Palantir's Maven artificial intelligence system as an official program of record, per a March 9 letter from Deputy Secretary of Defence Steve Feinberg. This decision locks in long-term use of Palantir's weapons-targeting technology across the US military, expected by the current fiscal year's end in September. Maven, a command-and-control software platform, analyses battlefield data from satellites, drones, radars, sensors, and intelligence reports to identify targets. Oversight of Maven will transfer from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency to the Pentagon's Chief Digital Artificial Intelligence Office within 30 days, with the Army handling future contracting.
Why it matters
Long-term funding and streamlined adoption of Palantir's Maven AI across the US military are now secured. This decision provides warfighters with a core system for rapid battlefield data analysis and target identification, reducing analysis time from hours to minutes. Procurement teams gain clarity on a foundational AI platform. However, security architects must address the integration of Anthropic's Claude AI within Maven, given the Pentagon's recent designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk.
