Mistral AI, a French startup, has received a €1.3 billion investment from ASML, a Dutch chipmaking equipment supplier. This investment grants ASML an approximate 11% stake in Mistral and a seat on its strategic committee. This collaboration is viewed as a strategic move to bolster European technological sovereignty in the AI sector. Mistral, founded in 2023 by former Google DeepMind and Meta researchers, is considered a leading European contender in the foundational AI model race, competing with US and Chinese AI giants. The company develops AI models and provides cloud services via its AI infrastructure platform in partnership with Nvidia.
While the investment provides Mistral with significant capital and credibility, the company still faces the challenge of competing against larger, more established AI players.
