Microsoft has successfully avoided a hefty antitrust fine from the European Union by agreeing to unbundle Teams from its Office 365 and Microsoft 365 suites. The EU's decision comes after a probe into the potentially illegal bundling of the Teams video conferencing application, which regulators feared gave Microsoft an unfair advantage since 2019.
Under the settlement terms, Microsoft will now offer its Office packages without Teams at a reduced price. Furthermore, the company has committed to improving interoperability between its services and rival software. These changes are expected to be implemented globally, providing consumers with greater choice and flexibility in selecting collaboration tools. This resolution marks a significant step in EU-US relations, especially given recent criticisms of the EU's approach to regulating Silicon Valley.
