Tesla is reportedly disbanding its Dojo supercomputer team, with its leader departing the company. This move disrupts the automaker's plans to develop in-house chips for autonomous driving. The Dojo supercomputer was designed to process extensive data from Tesla vehicles, crucial for training self-driving software.
Approximately 20 team members recently left to form DensityAI, and the remaining staff are being reassigned to other projects within Tesla. Tesla intends to increase reliance on external technology partners like Nvidia, AMD, and Samsung for computing and chip manufacturing. This shift suggests a move away from proprietary solutions towards leveraging external expertise.
The original Dojo project was a hybrid initiative combining supercomputing infrastructure and in-house chip development. In 2021, Tesla unveiled its custom D1 chip for Dojo, designed to work alongside NVIDIA GPUs. Plans for a next-generation D2 chip were also in the works.
