OpenAI sounds investor alarm

24 August 2025

OpenAI is alerting investors to be wary of potential scams from entities falsely claiming affiliation with the company. This warning arrives amidst a surge of investment interest in AI, where the fear of missing out (FOMO) may drive poor investment decisions. Some firms are leveraging the OpenAI name to attract funding, without any legitimate connection.

These scams often involve bogus investment products promising unrealistic returns by supposedly harnessing the power of AI. Tactics include impersonating OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, in fake videos. Scammers also target investors with deceptive pre-IPO offers. Investors should exercise extreme caution when approached by firms claiming OpenAI access or partnerships.

Sam Altman has also cautioned that AI could fuel realistic scams using fake voices and videos. These could become indistinguishable from reality. He also compared the AI hype to the dot-com bubble, warning that someone’s gonna get burned.
