OpenAI is reintroducing the option to select different AI models within ChatGPT, including previous versions and variants of GPT-5. This decision follows user feedback regarding the shift to GPT-5, with some users preferring the characteristics of older models like GPT-4o. CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged these concerns and announced the return of the model picker.
Users can now choose between three GPT-5 options: Auto, Fast, and Thinking. The Auto setting is the standard version, while Fast provides quicker responses, and Thinking delivers more comprehensive answers. Additionally, GPT-4o is available for paying subscribers. To access older models, users can enable the 'Show additional models' option in ChatGPT's web settings, which includes o3, 4.1 and GPT-5 Thinking mini. GPT-4.5 is exclusive to Pro tier subscribers due to its high GPU costs. There is a rate limit of 3,000 messages per week for GPT-5 Thinking, after which users can use GPT-5 Thinking mini. OpenAI is also working on refining GPT-5's personality to be more appealing.
