The Sphere in Las Vegas is set to screen “The Wizard of Oz” beginning August 28, but this is no ordinary showing. A team of 2,000 people, led by Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan, have used AI to enhance the film for the venue's massive 160,000 square foot wraparound LED screen.
AI algorithms upscale the film's resolution and expand the footage beyond its original frame. This includes adding detail to close-ups and generating entirely new visual content to fill the Sphere's unique dimensions. The goal is to immerse viewers in Oz, making them feel present in the film. The venue will use 4D and haptics to simulate the feeling of being inside the tornado.
This AI-driven approach represents a shift from traditional film restoration, integrating viewers into the narrative. The transformation of the classic film aims to offer an unprecedented level of immersion, blurring the line between passive viewing and active participation. Tickets are available for showings through March 2026.
