OpenAI and Oracle are collaborating to boost AI infrastructure with an additional 4.5 gigawatts of data centre capacity in the US as part of the Stargate project. This expansion aims to accelerate America's reindustrialisation and strengthen its AI leadership. The Stargate project, targeting a $500 billion investment, plans to establish 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure over four years.
This Oracle partnership, combined with the existing Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, will bring the total capacity under development to over 5 gigawatts, enough to power over 2 million chips. Parts of the Abilene facility are already operational, running early AI training workloads using Nvidia GB200 racks. The project anticipates creating over 100,000 jobs, including specialised roles for electricians and technicians.
Stargate is OpenAI's AI infrastructure platform, encompassing partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank, and CoreWeave. Microsoft will continue providing cloud services to OpenAI through Stargate. The project aims to meet OpenAI's growing compute demands and deliver more capable and reliable AI tools.
