Duolingo is betting big on artificial intelligence to broaden its educational scope beyond language learning. According to CFO Matt Skaruppa, AI will be instrumental in creating new courses and reaching a wider global audience. This move follows Duolingo's recent launch of 148 new language courses, a feat made possible by generative AI, which dramatically sped up content creation. The company's 'AI-first' strategy aims to transform course development and enhance user experience.
By leveraging AI, Duolingo has significantly reduced the time required to develop new courses. What once took years can now be achieved in months. The platform's expansion includes making popular languages like Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin accessible in all 28 supported user interface languages. This allows over a billion potential learners worldwide to access more language options. While AI is streamlining content creation, Duolingo emphasises that it is a tool to augment, not replace, human educators, ensuring courses meet rigorous quality standards.
