Walmart is increasing automation in its supply chain by using technology to monitor pallet deliveries from warehouses to its 4,600 US stores. This initiative focuses on the approximately 90 million pallets shipped annually. The company is implementing devices to track and manage these deliveries, aiming to improve efficiency and accuracy in its logistics operations.
Walmart's strategy includes deploying AI-powered solutions such as the AI Pallet Builder, which optimises pallet loading for stability and speed, and automated forklifts in distribution centres. These forklifts use AI-powered machine vision to unload pallets from trucks and integrate with automated storage and retrieval systems. The goal is to enhance the associate experience and improve business operations by automating warehouse loading docks.
These high-tech distribution centres also feature advanced technologies like nearly 80-foot-tall storage structures, de-palletising robots, and algorithms for optimal product placement. By automating tasks such as palletisation and depalletisation, Walmart aims to reduce damage to goods, improve order fulfilment, and ensure faster, more reliable delivery, ultimately benefiting consumers through fewer supply chain interruptions and potentially lower prices.
