OpenAI is embarking on a significant spending initiative, potentially reaching $500 billion, to bolster its semiconductor and data centre infrastructure. This follows an initial $1 trillion commitment, highlighting the company's dedication to securing the computing power necessary for advancing generative AI.
As part of this expansion, OpenAI has formed a multi-year partnership with AMD, securing up to 6 gigawatts of AMD's AI accelerators over the next five years. The initial gigawatt will consist of AMD's next-generation Instinct GPU, the MI450, expected in the second half of 2026. In return, OpenAI will grant AMD warrants for approximately 10% of its shares. This AMD deal follows a prior agreement with Nvidia for over $100 billion in equipment.
These strategic alliances aim to diversify OpenAI's chip supply and reduce reliance on Nvidia. The company's aggressive investment in computing infrastructure reflects the shift in AI focus towards inference workloads, with OpenAI seeking to offer inference services to generate revenue.
